Greensboro to 'Rock n' Bowl' with 'The Big Lebowski' [29 Jul 2009|01:15pm]

GREESBORO, NC – Get ready to laugh, bowl and rock n’ roll with “The Big Lebowski.”

On Wednesday, August 26th, the Mixed Tape Film Series and WUAG 103.1 FM will present the Big Lebowski Rock n’ Bowl, a city-spanning event that will be a celebration of bowling, White Russians and one of the most beloved comedies of all time.

The Big Lebowski Rock n’ Bowl kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with a 35mm screening of the Coen Brothers’ cult-classic “The Big Lebowski” at the Carolina Theatre on 310 South Greene Street. Immediately after the film, Lebowski fans can knock some pins and make some friends at the Brunswick Triad Lanes on 21 Oak Branch Road, where there will be unlimited bowling and a dance party featuring records spun by WUAG’s greatest DJ’s.

Released in 1998, “The Big Lebowski” follows the life of Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski, a man of simple pleasures and questionable means who finds himself in a world beyond his comprehension after an unfortunate case of mistaken identity. Jeff Bridges shines in the lead role, reacting to brilliant supporting turns by John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi and a very young Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Film critics and audiences originally shunned the film upon its release, however, due to a series of midnight screenings across the country as well as DVD sales, the film has become the greatest cult success of the last decade. Rolling Stone even went so far as to call the film “the most worshipped comedy of its generation.”

Other events in the Big Lebowski Rock n’ Bowl include a costume contest for people who dress like one of the characters from the film and bowling tournaments.

Brunswick Triad Lanes will serve patrons discounted White Russians until they close at 1 a.m.

Tickets for the movie and all-you-can-bowl event are $14 and are available at any Mixed Tape Film Series event or online at www.wuag.net.

For more information, e-mail movieshowjoe@gmail.com or call (336) 662-5691.

The Mixed Tape Film Series presents 'Oldboy' [11 Feb 2009|08:21pm]

thetaoofjoe2
Photobucket

From the creatively unparalleled world of the South Korean film industry comes Oldboy, a story of love, revenge, and madness. Director Chan-wook Park has style to spare in this story of Oh Dae-su (Min-sik Choi), a man who finds himself imprisoned inside a small hotel room. Deprived of human contact for 15 years, when he finally wakes up on a rooftop, he befriends a beautiful woman (Dae-han Ji) and goes on a suicide mission to uncover the identities of his mysterious captors. The plot twists like a beheaded cobra, leading us to a bold and shocking conclusion that will no doubt be revised when Steven Spielberg and Will Smith film their gutless American remake in the months ahead.

This movie might be the newest title in the Mixed Tape FIlm Series, but it is also one of the best. Come see the film that is destined to become a cult classic for years to come.

The movie screens on Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 and 10 p.m. at the Carousel Luxury Cinema on 1305 Battleground Avenue.

Tickets $4 (or $2 w. college I.D.). Beer $1. Pizza $1. Gourmet Cookies $1.

FAQ's

Q. Is this movie based on the Japanese manga of the same name?

A. Yes.

Q. Does that mean the movie is Japanese instead of South Korean?

A. No, it's still South Korean, just based on a Japanese funnybook.

Q. Is Oldboy one of the greatest films of this decade?

A. Easily.

Q. How many cool kid points will I get if I go see Oldboy?

A. I don't believe in cool kid points, but to humor you, I'll say more than 100.

Q. Will magic rainbows of awesome explode from out of my skull if I see this movie?

A. I've yet to witness that happening to anybody yet, but if it could happen to someone, it would have to be while they were watching this film.

Q. Sweet.

A. Is that a question?

On Saturday October 25th Acme Comics is hosting a special DC Comics event! We're bringing in the writer of Teen Titans, Sean McKeever, from Ohio. We're bringing in Tony Bedard, writer of Birds of Prey, from Florida. And we will have local Triad area artists Randy Green and John Floyd both of whom have done a variety of work for DC Comics. While Acme has long shown support for local creators, this will be the first time that Acme has hosted high profile out-of-state talent since the Acme Con Comic Convention which was last held in the early 1990s.

Signatures will be free and Acme will have a selection of material by these creators available. Also, since this event is focused on DC Comics specifically, we will be offering a one-day-only 40% off sale on all DC brand graphic novels and hardcovers. And finally, the offices of DC Comics were nice enough to provide us with a variety of cool promotional items ranging from posters, to buttons, and more. All of which will be free until they run out!

Acme Comics will be open from 10am until 7pm on Saturday October 25th and we hope to see you there!

More details can be found at www.acmecomics.com including complete checklists of material by Sean McKeever and Tony Bedard so you can get your comics signed! Hope to see you there!

Hi!

My name is Crystal and after I graduated ECU with a photo degree, I decided to start my own business here in Greenville. My focus is Fine Art, including body painting, underwater photos, erotica, boudoir, and any crazy idea you can think of.

Currently I am looking for a female model with a toned body to do some body painting for my portfolio. It would be nude, but the photos would be tasteful Fine Art. I would pay you by giving you a cd of the finished photos. If interested PLEASE E-mail me!

I want to start an art revolution in Greenville!

I also specialize in portraits of all types, senior photos, families, pets (I LOVE pets and have done work for the humane society), modeling, bridal, engagement, and I will also do weddings!

I am a photoshop expert, so I'm beginning to give lessons in my craft. Adobe photoshop lessons, as well as digital scrapbooking, also if you just need to know how to use a SRL Camera i can help you out.

Graphic Design is also a big part of today's society, and my ability to turn a concept into a great piece of work is amazing! Album Covers, Band Photography

I would absolutely LOVE for you to check out my website
( http://ckimages.ulmb.com ), and tell me what you think of my work!

I also have some work for sale at Ripple City (downtown Greenville) if you are interested in buying prints.

Framed pieces run from $100-$150 and prints, $15-$60

Please feel free to ask me any questions you might have, and please please please check out my website, leave feedback, schedule appointments, spread the WORD, or just look at some amazing local art!

Hi! I'm a graduate of ECU and I just started a photography business in Greenville. My goal is to try and bring a little creativity and spice to eastern NC. There are so many people that are really conservative and we need to change that! My business has that exact focus in mind. We do body painting, underwater, erotica, boudoir and any other really creative photo ideas you might have. This isn't just a photo experience. This is a life experience. Many people have come to me and said..."Wow, this experience really changed the way I feel about myself and my body." You will have these beautiful and creative photos for THE REST of your life! not to mention the fact that you can put a fine art photo of yourself right on your wall and people will be amazed that it's you! So check out my website, schedule an appointment, and help bring some creativity to Eastern NC!!!!

PaganFest USA - Raleigh [09 Mar 2008|01:47pm]

jeffsworld
Hello all! I'd forgotten all about this community until today.

For those of you that are into European folk metal bands such as Finntroll and Korpiklaani, the PaganFest USA tour is coming to the Volume 11 Tavern in Raleigh on May 20.

www.myspace.com/paganfestusa
www.volume11tavern.com

Also, my roommate and I are looking for people in Eastern NC with musical tastes more aligned with our own who would like to travel to shows with us. We often travel to Charlotte, NC and Springfield, VA to see bands we like, as the local venue seems to be more interested in booking lame metalcore, emo, and radio rock bands. Our tastes run the gamut but our primary interest is *good* metal bands. Our next planned adventure is to go to Tremont in Charlotte to see Nile on April 3. I also maintain a forum centered around female-fronted metal bands such as Nightwish, Within Temptation, and Epica: Far Beyond Vanity.

I was visiting my mom in G'boro and we went Thursday to NSC&Z. Haven't been there in oh, almost 20 years. :( Two months ago they had their Grand reopening and boy, what a change. No Lions, just Tigers and the Bears at the moment are two big stuffed Grizzlies in the main Foyer. :) They are planning to bring Black Bears from the mountains in next year, I believe.

Took photos. Some not as good as others. The three Macaws that should be outside enjoying the sunlight live in a big room near the back of the main building. They were having a blast showing off for me while I took photos. The lighting in their room was poor so I had to use the flash which reflected off the glass, but you can still see them.

Late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning there was vandalism at the parking lot entrance on Lawndale Drive. The two tortie sculptures were just about destroyed. Their little heads had been kicked off. Cable Channel 14 was there and you can find the article (Beware: Galopgus Tortie slow loading) at:

Go enjoy! And if you're in Greensboro, please go visit the center and zoo. http://www.natsci.org/

Taxes [25 Apr 2007|03:57pm]

cutegrljay
can anyone tell me what property taxes, on average, cost in the Raleigh area. preferably in the suburbs, not in the city areas.

my husband and i are looking to get out of jersey. we're trying to get some info on a few different areas and we're starting to like NC more and more. jersey is just too expensive; even if we could afford a $300,000 one bedroom starter home, we wouldnt be able to afford the $5000+ taxes per year.

also... how do people originally from NC feel about northerners moving down south? honestly. i've heard good and bad, but is there any one particular region or area that isnt exactly... welcoming?
